love week: lots-o' loves. (not to be confused with lots-o-the-bear).

today i love lots-o' things:

i love trader joes.

i really stink at going in the grocery store and trying out new things.
i think because the grocery store just carries wayyyy too many things.
and wayyy too many varieties/brands of things.
that's why i love trader joe's.
i love how their own brand is super delicious, which means if i want to try something new, i need not fear because i know their brand will be super tasty. and if i don't like whatever pesto-humus-weirdo combo i happened to try, i'll know it's because i just didn't like that pesto weirdness and not because it was bad quality.
i love how fresh and beautiful their produce is.
i love how many healthy options they have.
i love how competitive (for California) their prices are.
and i love way too many snacks and treats from there. my most recent faves:
vanilla cream yogurt....

with a heaping handful (yes, i just said heaping handful- because i'm barbaric and don't know how to use flatware) of pecan praline granola.... mmmm.

it will knock your socks right off.
and i also really like these little apple strawberry fruit flakes.

don't they just look cute?
i know, what a reason to buy food.
but really, they're good. they're like fruit snacks but somehow you feel less guilty eating them. because they're made with 97% fruit. that's a good thing, right?

while i'm on the food topic, i love this oatmeal bread.

my friend Jen posted the recipe a few weeks ago, and i baked it for the first time last week.
i have baked it twice since then.
if you're dieting, this bread is not for you.
if you're not, why are you still sitting here reading my blog? go make it now. thank me later.

for those of you who are dieting and are still reading this, i'm sure you love clementines as much as i do.
i love this big bag of clementines plopped on my counter top so much.

i love peeling them in one piece.
i love their sweetness.
and i love feeling like a good mom when Ellie asks me for seconds or thirds of them.

and finally (just for today, c'mon, it's only Tuesday....i've got plenty more love to share),
i love joy school.
it seriously is the best thing that has happened to Ellie, aside from Nursery.
she has learned so many things- most importantly how to interact with other kids.
and i have gotten to know other awesome moms doing it.
and we've all become good friends because of it.
i appreciate all the time and energy they put into it (and the break i get because of it every week).
and i actually enjoy hosting it, too.
it let's me channel that inner-teacher in me that i'd been missing the past year.
and gives me something to prepare for and think about.
and i love getting to know these cute little kiddos.
today we had a Valentine's Day party here.
we learned about the letter "H"- for Hearts (get it, hearts- valentine's day..eh eh?)
so we covered these little mailboxes with hearts (an idea i snatched from my super-duper-crafty-and-cute friend Kristy)-

oh man, they LOVED doing this. they were very serious about this sticker-heart-attacking business.

and then halfway through the day i slipped a hearts-goodie bag in their mailboxes-

which had tons of different heart candies in it. they were pretty amazed that they had magically gotten candy-mail. i do love some good magic.

later we had some heart-shaped cupcakes with heart sprinkles.

which made a gigantic mess.
but was totally worth it.
just look at the joy!

i love throwing a good party for those cute little squirts.
i just love joy school.

and that's all for now.
more loves tomorrow!

*side note: i have to say that i looovvved all of your comments about the Bachelor yesterday. you guys are so funny! and i'm glad i'm not the only one who wastes two hours of my precious life on such ridiculously addicting drama. but really, can Michelle please go home already? i'm so not looking forward to watching her mack on Brad on the beach next week. uuugggghhhh.

berries in brentwood.

today we went berry picking in Brentwood.
when i think of berry picking, i can't help but think of the Sound of Music-
you know, the part where the Captain is trying to figure out where his michevious lil stinkers have been...
and one of the kids tries to convince him they've been berry picking...except they tell him they were picking blueberries.....when it's too early to pick blueberries....so they try to cover up their lie by saying they were really strraaaahhhhwwberries...(you know, the cool British accent i'm talking about here)...it's just been so cold lately, that they turned blue.

giggle.

whilst picking strawberries, i tried to imagine the straaaahhhwwwberries being blue.
made me laugh.
anyway, Sound of Music must've been in my subconscious today because i even dressed Ellie just like little Gretl in the movie..you know, where she wears the little overalls and pig-tails.

yes, Ellie looked quite like Gretl today.
pretty cute.
and might i add, picking your own strawberries is the way to go, my friends.

tons and tons of delicious strawberries.
somehow way more delicious than Costco strawberries (which is saying a lot), let alone grocery store ones.
and it's a way fun activity to keep yourself busy.

and it's waaay cheaper.
seriously cheaper.
the only downside is this:
when you bring a 2 year old, all they want to do is plop themselves in the middle of the field, and devour every single one. so what if you haven't paid for them? they're there. and they want to be eaten. RIGHT THEN.
and there's only so much refuting and refusing you can do.

plus, isn't that the best part?
devouring your spoils?

i'd say the mess + dirt-covered face suggests we may have over-done it a bit.

and then you see this picture, and notice the creepy strawberry-blood on Ellie's neck, and realize we reeeeally overdid it.
they were just that delicious.

after the berry picking, we just had to head over to some nearby peach/nectarine groves and snatch up some of those goods, too.

Ellie insisted on holding the bucket at first.
that was, of course, until she realized it was very heavy and awkward to carry.

and she was very confused why we couldn't just put the ones on the ground in our bucket.
wasn't that easier?
well, yes, Ellie, it would have been easier.
and much more bug-filled, and seasoned with some nice dirt.
no thank-you.

but she was a good helper, and picked quite a few winners for us.

and even enjoyed doing it, too.

she loved running into her friend, Cale there.

just look how she adoringly looks at him.
is it just me, or does she have a "thing" for him?
seriously.
it's cute.
so, they checked out each other's buckets.

and did some fruit swappin.

until Ellie got distracted by the dirt.
and then she was lost forever.

why are kids so intrigued with dirt?
i don't get it.

one of my favorite parts was just finding her hiding behind random trees.
lots of times, she'd just be standing there.
and i'd wonder, what is going on in that little brain?

and then i'd see her giggle.
and i'd think,
she just thinks she's being sneaky.
i remember when i used to like being sneaky, too.
and the fact that i have a stash of cookies hidden in my pantry proves that i still like being sneaky too.

and then we of course had to partake of our new delicious spoils.

and they were just as sweet and juicy and delicious as they look.
and now my fingers,
they smell like peachy, nectariney, berry goodness.
and i've even washed 'em.
i hope they stay like this for a long time.

and now......... i'm beat.
so tired that i haven't moved from this couch for the last hour.
and i wonder when i will move again.

happy, happy happy summer memories.

{p.s. a big thank you Amy W., for putting all these fun summer activities together! you're the best :) }

Q&A

q: "hey marci, how's the 'no sugar' diet going?"

a: "it was going great until five minutes ago. when i ate this:"

and you wonder how it's going for M? read his take here.

we are officially the worst no-sugar dieters ever.
try again tomorrow?
or maybe monday...since you can't start something on a weekend...

oh, and happy conference weekend, everybody!

i'm mean.

it's been a little more than a day with 0 sugar.

this is how i'm feeling:

i'm mean.
i'm moody.
i'm thinking of sugar every second.
(is anyone else like this with 0 sugar?)

oh, and i feel skinnier.

ha.

ok, maybe not skinnier.
but... i'd like to think i am.
because we just bought season passes for this place:

for one summer, i am excited to put all my apprehensions and qualms of public pools aside (jus think of all of that PEE...don't lie, you worry about it too) to enjoy Seven Peaks Water Park as often as i'd like. anyone else getting passes? anyone else WANT to get a pass to join me?

anyway, back to my point about me being angry and moody due to my sugar withdrawals.
getting a Seven Peaks pass made me think:
huh, i wonder what swim-suit i'll wear.
wait.
swimsuit season.
ME. IN. A. SWIMSUIT.

a very frightening scenario.
which hasn't happened since my pre-Ellie life.
whoa.

so i'll stick to the 0 sugar.

for now.

it's the end of the world as i know it.

i'd like to take care of five items of business, please.

a-hem:

1. wowsers. thank you SO much for all of your comments about my new 'do. it was like year-book day receiving all of your lovely notes (minus the "call me" and "stay cool" and "U R HOT" messages). made my lil heart swell. how did i get so lucky to have all of you in my life?

2. it's March 30th. THE END OF MARCH. what happened to March?

3. i reeeealllllyyyy realllllyyyy despise April Fool's day. so please...pretty please with a cherry on top...don't try and trick me on Wednesday.

4. last week was teacher appreciation week. being a teacher is awesome, but being a teacher during teacher appreciation week is THE BOMB. lots of sweet notes, flowers, little surprises, yummy food.....and lots of treats. which leads me to #5

5. i'm laying off the sugar till Easters. really. i am. my poor lil Abs are in there somewhere...hiding behind all the sugar and junk i keep consuming. and while i'd like to blame it on the nursing, M and i made a deal last night: no sugar till Easter. i mean that's only two weeks. right? i can do it. so, this morning, i put away all my delicious treats in this little box:

and now i need to find a really high place to hide it.

my question: how do you convince yourself to lay off sugar? it's so hard. and addicting.

i got some of this sugar-free gum:

which hopefully will help.....because i'm already craving sugar and salivating over it and it's only 9:34 am. i reallllllly want some of those cadbury eggs.

BUT NO.
even though it's the end of the world as i know it, i won't back down.

maybe after one bite.
of one little egg.

i need therapy.
s.o.s.
