love you grandma.

{my brother and i with my Grandma and Grandpa}

today i feel a bundle of mixed emotions.

i am feeling super bummed and blue because my grandma passed away last night.
she was in an immense amount of pain- and was in extreme agony and suffering this last while- so i'm happy knowing she's not suffering anymore. and it also makes me so happy to know she's been reunited with my grandpa, her companion of over 50 years, who just passed away in May.
but again, i'm sad. sad knowing that my own dad has lost both of his parents within four months of each other.
sad knowing that he was there, watching them deteriorate- and not be able to do anything about it.
sad knowing that my mom, who has been "their angel" as grandpa would call her, was there more often than not in these last few days, weeks, months, and years, even- to see and feel every emotion of this somber journey with both my grandpa and grandma- and watch it come to a close.

my grandma was a simple, classy lady.
a few of my favorite things about her:
she always had her lipstick on. and it was almost always red.
she made some fabulous desserts- i just made her famous cheesecake for the first time....and w.o.w.! i drool.
she was a fabulous house-wife- sewing blankets for each of us grandchildren, adorable aprons, tablecloths, and everything else.
she was one of the wittiest women i've ever met- and was truly hilarious in her day.

but the thing about my grandma i'll remember most was her relationship with my grandpa.

my grandma and grandpa lived a love story.
he was in the Navy.
she was a nurse.
his ship was ported in San Diego at the same time my grandma was there on an internship for Nursing.
he told me once that when he saw her, he was smitten. she was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. it was love at first sight.

they were married over 50 years- and held hands and made each other laugh every day. when my grandpa died, part of my grandma died with him. and so, four months later, her broken heart was reunited with him- because she just could not live without him.

all i know is i want my marriage to be like theirs.
they loved each other.
they cherished each other.
they took care of each other.
and they were just dang cute.

{pictures from my wedding day}

man i miss them both.
and am so glad i know we'll all be together someday.
how would i be able to live without the peace that truth gives me?
i just don't know.

life is so fragile, isn't it?
hug the ones you love extra tight today, and always!

I'm so sorry, Marce! My dad lost both of his parents and his grandmother within a 6-month period 2 years ago. I'm glad you have such great memories of them! I know how hard it is to say goodbye, but I also know the relief that they are finally out of pain and at peace. Hugs to you and your family, dear friend!

I thought I was ok with not being able to go to the services, but your blog post just made me break down. I'm so sad I can't be there with the family. I was so sad when I missed Grandpa's funeral. But like your post said, I'm glad they are reunited and out of pain. I will miss them both. P.S. In that top picture Grandpa's arms were super buff, I never saw him like that, it is amazing. It seems like that's where Sean might have gotten his arms.

I love this post, Marcie. I will miss them so. I cherish every minute I got to spend with them. They treated me like their own granddaughter. I'm so happy to know they are together again. You are so lucky to have such an amazing family. Bryan and I are especially grateful to your parents who took such wonderful care of them this past year. Your mom is seriously an angel. Hugs to you and your fam. We love you!

I'm so sorry, Marce. Their love story and sympathizing with how much your little heart must ache made me cry this morning. I'm sorry. Sometimes it's a blessing how quickly our lives pass by. It makes it easier to realize how quickly we'll all be reunited forever. Hugs your way. XOXO. Love ya.

Sorry for you & your families' loss. We just got home from vacation and found out that Tim's great-grandma passed away and it is a very bittersweet time. Good to know that they are in a better place with their sweethearts but bitter for the rest of us here without them. Beautiful tribute.
